My Two Cents: Melanie Sojourner; avoiding poverty; teen violence; medical marijuana

My Two Cents welcomes anonymous commentary from readers. Mean-spirited observations rarely make it into print or onto the website. Constructive criticism with ideas for improvement is greatly preferred. Submissions are reviewed before publication. They should be less than 100 words and will be edited for clarity.

A CONSERVATIVE’S TANTRUM

Melanie Sojourner’s editorial Tuesday read like a toddler’s tantrum. She’s upset that the legislature didn’t use her redistricting maps, which she admitted to gerrymandering on purpose to decrease Democratic seats. If she’s such a “strong conservative Republican” then she should be able to win a seat in whatever district she is placed. She forgets that a representative’s role is to transmit the ideals of her constituency to the state legislature. In such a lopsided Republican state, one seat will make little difference. However, burning bridges creates deadlock which punishes the voters, not the elected.

HOW TO AVOID POVERTY

79% of young people who fail to do these three things end up in poverty and dysfunctional families: 1. Graduate from high school. 2. Marry before having children. 3. Marry after the age of 20. There are always consequences to good and bad decisions. Students, set yourself up to succeed!

THE ROOT CAUSE OF TEEN VIOLENCE

One of our local leaders said serious brainstorming sessions are needed regarding McComb’s violence. Thus far these sessions have not even mentioned the root cause of teen violence. Out-of-wedlock birth and dysfunctional families is the origin. The conventional family, where there is a loving mother, and a loving father provides by far the best environment for raising children.

WHAT ABOUT NOISE ORDINANCES?

One night recently, my date and I enjoyed a hot fudge sundae at the Sonic Drive-In on Delaware Avenue. Several cars sped up and down Delaware and in and out of the car wash with very loud mufflers. They were squealing tires and sounding off their mufflers to the maximum. If the police had been around, they could have enforced the noise ordinance and other violations, and brought peace to the community.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

I find it extremely hypocritical that the Pike County sheriff can suppress my First Amendment rights to post my comments or opinions on the sheriff’s office publicly owned Facebook page, but can go into a public county supervisors’ meeting and use his First Amendment right of free speech and voice his opinion on the medical marijuana issue that 75% of Pike County taxpayers voted for.

A MARIJUANA MUSING

I’m not opposed to plant-based medicine. It’s been successfully used for thousands of years. But I an concerned about this marijuana craze. A real doctor would go to jail for prescribing it, it’s not dispensed by a real pharmacy, and not supplied by a real pharmaceutical company. Either the proposal we voted on was purposely confusing or our society has declined more than I thought.

VOTERS APPROVED MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Over and over again, we have seen politicians try to take away our individual right to vote. Now our sheriff has joined that chorus. Pike County, as well as the state of Mississippi,  voted overwhelmingly  to legalize medical marijuana but our sheriff wants to ignore the will of the people!
