The Greenwood City Council recently voted to opt out of Mississippi’s medical marijuana program. The city wants to know all the proper regulations of medical marijuana before moving forward with the bill.
“We did a resolution to opt out and that is only temporarily. I think the board has full confidence that we will opt in at a later date. We just wanted to know the regulations.”
The Leflore County Board of Supervisors is taking that same approach as the city.
“If we can do a temporarily opt out for a period of time to determine how long that is, then we can study what the law says and see what discretion the board has, as to how many feet it will be away from a church or a school. Things ig that nature.”
The board is skeptical and believes that the county will opt in because of all the health benefits medical marijuana has.
“Marijuana or at least the chemical in marijuana can help certain diseases. It helps pain and PTSD.”
The city and the board of supervisors are not sure when they will be opting in and no vendor has come forward to the city or county with a permit to have a growing facility.
“I looked at everything. I understood what I was looking out. We made determinations that we protect the children. We protected residential neighborhoods and things of that nature.”
The city is planning on having the same regulations as it imposes on bars and liquor stores.
“We wanted to adopt the same regulations set by the city, once we got clarity on it there is a real good chance the City of Greenwood will opt back in. We have a ordinance in place for things like night clubs and bars and we will probably make medical marijuana similar to that.”
