It’s a common saying that the more, the merrier. It would appear the Bank of Commerce has taken that sentiment to heart and is now preparing to open a new branch in Columbus inside the former Cadence Bank located at 3601 Bluecutt Road, near the Mi Toro Mexican restaurant.
Columbus Market President Mark Crigler told me the bank just recently got into the building to begin renovations and will update the aesthetic to look more like its other branches.
“Right now, it’s just demo work,” Crigler said. “We’re going to probably restructure the layout on the inside and kind of dress up the outside as well, just kind of renovate it into something more of our brand.”
Crigler said the new branch will open sometime in the spring, featuring two drive-thrus, which he said will help the bank reach more customers.
“We’re excited to be able to expand in Columbus and better serve our customers,” he said.
Moving slightly south, the owners of Magnolia Cannabis Services, a medical marijuana dispensary located at 901 Hwy. 45 N., have submitted an application to the Mississippi Department of Health for a cultivation license.
Owner George Terrell Pittman told me he and his family submitted the paperwork last week and plan to locate the grow operation for the dispensary in the same building. He also said he is about halfway finished with the current renovations to the storefront.
“We’re going as fast as we can to get everything ready,” Pittman said. “We know it’s going to take some time after the first of the year. Just got a lot of work to do.”
Pittman said he expects to hear back from MSDH by the end of the year and will open the dispensary itself within the first quarter of 2023.
In Starkville, the Aldi grocery store located within the Triangle Crossing Shopping Center at 607 Hwy. 12 is now expected to open Dec. 15 after a further delay with the installation of electrical switchgear, Developer Mark Castleberry said.
It was supposed to open on Dec. 1, Castleberry said, though he is confident about the new date.
“We just keep aware of things,” he said. “That’s the date they’ve given us, and we feel pretty good about it.”
Commercial grocers aren’t the only thing coming to “market” in Starkville.
Poor House Homestead Market, located at 2241 Old Hwy 25 S., will soon reopen under the new management of Luke Sellers. The market had originally closed in November.
Though Sellers didn’t tell me an exact date for reopening, he said he is currently looking for a few new vendors and will keep the market mostly the same as a family-styled farm market selling food and local goods as well as providing space for vendors to sell their goods.
However, he will be adding some take-out barbecue options, which I personally can’t wait for.
“It’s honestly multiple dreams coming true at once,” he said.” I took a chance and called when it was available to lease, and it never felt more right from that moment on.”
Finally, BJ’s Family Pharmacy moved from its original location at 223 S. Jackson St. to the former Fred’s building at 605 S. Jackson St. on Nov. 21.
Co-owner Jennifer Cougle told me the team decided it was time to move into a larger space, giving the pharmacy’s expanded staff a little more legroom to walk around.
“We have been in our original location for 10 years and absolutely loved the location,” Cougle said. “We’ve grown. We have more employees, so we were running out of space behind the counters for our employees and for our stock of medications.”
Cougle said that since the move was complete, the business has been doing well and the team is enjoying the new and improved space.
“It’s going great,” she said. “We’re getting used to a new workflow. You know the first week was dicey, but we’re getting used to doing things in a new setup.”
As my friend Porky Pig might say, “That’s all, folks.” Make sure to check back in next week for more goings on in business.
